January 19
Took the road to Hana to get to the Pipiwai hiking trail. The highway takes about 2.5 hours to drive if you don't stop to have a look. Its very winding and narrow and passes over many bridges, which are one lane wide.  You travel between beautiful coast lines, lush tropical rain forests, and mountains. We found out later that the north trail is "the preferred" way but the garmin took us the south trail. Most of it was unpaved, and at times single lane in both directions. Several times we thought we were hearing Banjo music ( perhaps ukulele??) ๐Ÿ˜† there are over 600 curves! Louie did some good driving!

The hike was great! it was about 4 miles and an 800 Ft climb. It follows a stream, passing over a few gorges. Masahiko falls is a 200 Ft drop. Love the ancient looking banyan tress with their aerial roots! We passed a few more waterfalls where some brave " young folks" were jumping in! We decided to pass on the jumping! The path had several areas of rock steps. Glad I brought a hiking pole! The best part was walking through a beautiful, thick bamboo forest! Incredible! Loved the sound of the bamboo knocking against each other! The end of the line was Waimoku Falls. The falls was 400 ft.at the back of a three-way sheer wall of lava. The way back was just as amazing.

we took the north road back, which had just as many curves but at least was paved the whole way.

We walked down to The Beach Bums for dinner (with Dylan the waiter again). No mai tais tonight. Just some local beers! How could life get any better?! ๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒ…
