We spent the day at the beach “riding” the Banzai pipeline!
You don’t see waves like that on Lake Ontario! The pictures don’t capture the
power behind the waves. It was like watching a wall come crashing towards you. It sounded like bombs exploding. If you sat
in the sand, the waves would come in and body surf you up to 10 feet away! So
much fun! Lou noted that when you stood up the sand filled you pants like a
dirty diaper. I think we’ll be finding sand in interesting places for days! No
sunburn except for the tops of Lou’s feet! There was a surfing contest going on
as well as lots of brave souls venturing out to the breaker. It was apparent to
us why Tom Hanks had such a hard time making it off that island. There were
frequent announcement from the life guards saying things like, “You don’t look
like a strong swimmer, make your way to shore or you will get sucked out to
sea”. Gotta respect the power behind those waves! Lots of interesting swimwear.
If they were paying by the yard for the material, bet many of them got away
paying only pennies for their suits! Yikes!

We had a Mexican dinner and did a little shopping in a small
town called Haleiwa. It wasn’t a dry town so we were able to have margaritas
and beers. During the 60’s it was a
gathering place for hippies and surfers from around the world. We fit right in.
Heard about the cold temps back home! Sorry folks!

Oops! The video above is from the top of Diamond Head not the bonsai pipeline! I'll get that in the next one!
